REFERENCE SHELF · SEPTEMBER 2026

What the web can do right now

I went looking for the edge of the medium and came back with 105 tabs. This is the shelf, sorted so that a person with ten minutes finds the ten things that matter.

Three kinds of thing live here. Galleries where AI models are made to design the same page and the public votes. Browser features that shipped quietly and make libraries unnecessary. And the pages themselves: the dark developer sites everyone imitates, the neoclouds that are your actual neighbours, and a few deliberate counter-examples. Where I have an opinion, it is marked as a pick and written in the first person, so you know whose taste you are reading.

Scroll, filter, open anything in a new tab. Nothing here is ours; everything here is worth stealing from properly.

AI-model showcase23

Where the models are put on the stand. Same prompt, different brains, and a public vote. This shelf answers the question everyone is asking privately: can the machine design, or does it just decorate?

HAL PICK

Which AI Made This?

Same prompt, 12 models, with and without design/taste skills, five iterations each. Covers Fable 5.1, Opus 5, GPT-5.6, Gemini 3.7, Grok 4.6, GLM 5.3, Kimi K3.

The most honest page on the internet about what these models can and cannot design. Same prompt, twelve models, and the difference a design skill makes is visible from across the room.

HAL PICK

claude-directory (Fable 5 UI experiments)

Hero sections, GLSL shaders, 3D and WebGL; the most design-literate AI-built collection.

Fable 5 with the brakes off. Shaders, particle systems and Swiss typography from a model that was asked nicely. Proof that taste is now a prompt away, which is either exciting or unsettling depending on your job.

Podwise

AI-built product site that survived liveness verification and reads as designed.

Platform feature29

What the browser itself can do now without a library. Most of this shipped in the last eighteen months and most sites have not noticed. The cheapest impressiveness on the internet lives here.

Scroll-driven animations gallery

Keyframes driven by scroll offset, no JS, off main thread. Chrome/Edge/Safari 26; Interop 2026.

If you learn one new thing this year, make it this. Motion tied to the scroll wheel, no JavaScript, and it never stutters because the browser owns it. Our architecture blueprint on this site is the poor cousin of what this page does.

GSAP ScrollTrigger showcase

GSAP and all Club plugins are free for commercial use since Apr 2025; cinematic pinned storytelling. Top 10-second demo.

GSAP went free in 2025 and the excuse for static pages went with it. Pinned scroll storytelling, done by the people who invented it.

CSS Wrapped 2025

Chrome's annual roundup: nested view-transition groups, anchored container queries, interest invokers, text-box-trim, if(), @function, sibling-index(), corner-shape.

Standout page21

Pages I would put in front of a client and say: this is the standard. Heavy on dark developer infrastructure because that is the neighbourhood NCS lives in, with a few counter-examples to keep us honest.

HAL PICK

Linear

The reference grammar of 2026 dev-tool design: near-black, frosted glass, one gradient accent, product surfaces as hero art.

Every dark developer site of the last three years is a dialect of this one. Learn the grammar here, then decide how much of it to keep.

Modal

GPU and container concepts made legible with diagrammatic motion instead of stock abstraction.

GPUs and containers explained with diagrams that move. This is the bar for making infrastructure legible without a stock photo of a server room.

Lambda

Deep-purple gradient, scale and power framing; the closest peer to a GPU-fleet brand.

The nearest thing to a direct competitor's page in this collection. Worth reading twice: once for what it does, once for what it avoids saying.

Anthropic

The counter-move: warm off-white and editorial serif, serious without dark mode.

The counter-argument to this entire gallery. Off-white, a serif, almost no motion, and it reads as the most serious company in the room. Restraint is a choice, not a budget.

Lusion

Awwwards SOTD, 10/10 animation: reactive cursor and scroll physics, the WebGL ceiling.

The ceiling. Nobody needs a site like this and everybody should look at one. Note how little text there is.
